How is InMail different from a connection request or a regular message?
A connection request asks the person to accept a relationship first. A regular message is available once they do. InMail bypasses that step: the recipient can see your message even if they have not added you. It is useful when you need a particular decision-maker and cannot wait for a connection request, or when that person rarely accepts them.
| Tool | What the recipient gets | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Connection request | A short invitation to connect | You have shared context, such as an event, colleague or post |
| Message to a connection | A direct-message conversation | The connection has already been accepted |
| InMail | A paid message outside your network | You need a specific person and have a concrete reason to contact them now |
InMail does not replace a managed LinkedIn outreach campaign. It is one option for a first touch. Reserve it for roles that are difficult to reach through a general company inbox: a practice lead, founder of an overseas division, product owner or subject-matter expert with a visible industry remit.
How InMail changes the mechanics of a B2B campaign
Because each message is paid, InMail works best from a specific hypothesis, not a broad job-title list. Check the company, the person's function and a relevant signal, such as a vacancy, new business line, market entry or a post about a live problem. Without a signal, InMail can become an expensive version of “shall we book a call?”
- Identify the company event that gives you a reason to start a conversation.
- Choose a role that can confirm the problem or direct you to its owner.
- State the observable fact and ask one question that is easy to answer.
- Offer a resource, example or brief call after the person responds.
A closer look at the first message
A weak opening says: “We help automate sales and would like to show you our platform. When can we arrange a demo?” The recipient cannot tell why you contacted them or what needs automating. A more useful approach is: “We saw that you opened a partner channel in the CIS. Are new resellers being onboarded by the sales team, or through a separate partner operation?” The sales intent is not disguised, but the question can be answered in one sentence.
Use InMail to begin a relevant conversation, not to send a proposal, presentation or long catalogue of services.
Mistakes that spend InMail credits without a reply
- Writing solely because a profile contains a suitable job title. A title does not prove ownership of the task.
- Sending the same text as both a connection request and an InMail on the same day.
- Starting with a description of your company rather than the reason for contacting that person.
- Asking for a meeting before testing for need with a question.
- Treating silence as a rejection from the whole company when another stakeholder may own the process.
For a complex sale, build a list around target companies and the roles inside them, rather than isolated profiles. This is closer to account-based marketing: identify the account first, then map routes to several people involved in the decision. If one InMail receives no response, do not repeat it from another profile; check a different role and channel instead.
When InMail is not the right channel
InMail is not for you if your offer has no clear recipient or reason to contact them. “We help businesses grow” does not become stronger because it arrives as a paid message. It is also a poor primary channel for broad testing across the Russian market, where a limited paid channel cannot replace email outreach or multichannel outreach.
Do not build the entire campaign around LinkedIn if relevant decision-makers rarely maintain profiles there, or if the company handles work through corporate email and Telegram. In Russia and the CIS, decision-makers often read their own business email, while Telegram is a working business channel. Keep InMail for a small number of priority people and build the main route from the contacts that are actually available; researching roles and companies is a separate lead list building task.
