What door does each channel open?
Email starts with the company: its website, corporate domain, industry, region and the roles involved. It is the practical route when you need to work through a defined set of packaging manufacturers in the Volga region or integrators with a particular specialisation. LinkedIn starts with a professional profile: career history, posts, current role, team and professional network. In short, email answers “which companies should we contact?”, while LinkedIn answers “who inside this company should we start with?”
| Criterion | ||
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Corporate domain and company role | Individual professional profile |
| List scale | You can work systematically through a target company list | Depends on profile availability and completeness |
| Reason for first contact | A business event or fact about the company | Experience, a post, a new role or a professional topic |
| Where the conversation goes | Email, calendar or CRM | Often email or Telegram after the connection is accepted |
| Main operational risk | Undelivered mail and domain reputation | Account restrictions or an unanswered connection request |
Do not force the channels to compete on one metric. They begin with different evidence: email checks whether the company address is reachable; LinkedIn checks whether a relevant, active professional profile exists.
Where to find decision-makers when the title does not match the decision
In Russian B2B, purchasing rarely sits with a person whose job title perfectly matches an org chart. An industrial equipment supplier may need to reach the technical director, chief engineer and production lead. With email, build that group from the company structure: its site, public company information, industry directories, vacancies and modernisation news. LinkedIn makes it easier to see who has implemented similar projects or recently moved into the relevant function.
There is an important boundary. A regional company owner may have no active LinkedIn profile. Do not replace that missing profile with a random manager’s account. In that case, a corporate email address or a precise public contact is more dependable. For IT, consulting, SaaS and international teams, the network usually provides more context on how responsibilities are divided. See LinkedIn outreach for Russia and CIS for that type of work.
- Choose email when the list begins with companies, an industry, a region or a business characteristic.
- Choose LinkedIn when a person’s specific expertise, new role or project-team membership matters.
- Use both when you need to identify the person through their profile and continue a substantive exchange in corporate email.
Why the same offer should not be copied between email and LinkedIn
An email can rely on a fact about the company: “We saw that you are expanding a packing line. We supply checkweighing equipment for projects like this. Would it make sense to send a specification for your production site?” The recipient can comfortably reply yes, no, or name the responsible person. The first email should not pretend that you already know each other.
The same text can feel out of place in LinkedIn, where it arrives in a personal professional space. Start instead with profile context: “Ivan, we noticed your experience launching production lines. We are collecting practical perspectives on checkweighing in packing. May I add you as a contact and ask one question?” A connection request does not need to sell; it needs to give a clear reason to connect.
A weak LinkedIn request says, “We offer the best solutions, let’s schedule a call.” The decision-maker cannot see why they were selected or what the call is for. In email, the opposite mistake is an overly personal opening with no connection to the company; it reads like a template even when it includes a name. A good sequence gives each channel a distinct role rather than sending duplicates on the same day.
What determines cost beyond subscriptions and sending
For email, the work starts before the first send: defining target companies, identifying relevant roles and addresses, checking addresses, preparing sending infrastructure, writing messages and handling replies. A cheap, unverified list turns apparent savings into bounces and lost companies. Across our campaigns, 97.7% of addresses accepted an email; that is a result from specific source data, not a promise for a new list.
LinkedIn requires less email infrastructure but more manual precision. You need a credible profile, relevant people, careful account activity, timely replies and a way to move a substantive conversation into the most useful channel. A tool subscription does not replace this work. Channel cost is determined by the time required to find the right person and the quality of the reason for contact.
- Count the accessible target companies and accessible profiles separately.
- Decide who will answer “please send more details” on the day it arrives.
- Then compare the full scope: email infrastructure, LinkedIn profile work and reply handling.
If you need one sequence with different entry points, see multi-channel outreach. Scope and pricing are outlined on the pricing page.
How to decide before you lose a week
Take 20 target companies and check two things manually. First, whether their sites show working corporate addresses or a clear route to the relevant role. Second, whether the likely decision-makers have complete LinkedIn profiles with a current company, function and signs of activity. Do not substitute the assumption that “they are probably on LinkedIn” for an actual check.
- If most companies have a clear domain but decision-maker profiles are hard to find, use email first.
- If the list is short, the decision is complex and decision-makers show relevant expertise, start with LinkedIn.
- If both routes are available, separate the contacts by purpose and timing instead of duplicating the offer.
- If there are no domains, profiles or reason to contact, rebuild the target segment first.
Across OT9’s accumulated work, 48,100 companies have replied after contact from defined target selections, including 6,500 explicit positive responses requesting details, a proposal or a meeting. This informs how we assess list scale and quality; it is not a forecast for every offer. You can request a free outreach audit to review your starting selection.
When neither email nor LinkedIn is right for you
Do not launch either channel if you cannot name the specific problem you solve and the person for whom it matters. Broad claims such as “we help companies grow”, “we optimise processes” or “we provide IT services” give no one a reason to reply. First define a testable scenario: reduce production-line downtime, find an implementation contractor, replace an existing supplier or close a skills shortage.
Email is not the main channel when your market is made up of microbusinesses without stable corporate domains, contacts become obsolete quickly and buying decisions depend entirely on personal referrals. LinkedIn is not a fit when the audience consists of local owners without active profiles, employees rarely accept outside connection requests, or the product is for mass consumer demand. Partner referrals, industry events, calls, tender platforms or inbound marketing may be more suitable.
Neither channel is suitable if sales cannot process a reply within one business day, there are no materials for a useful next conversation, or you require a guaranteed lead volume by a fixed date. Do not launch without basic list validation either: without domains, profiles, confirmed roles and a reason to contact, you are measuring the quality of guesses, not demand.
