Where the conversation starts: an active search or a chosen company
B2B search advertising captures the moment when someone is already typing a need into Yandex: an accounting-system implementation, equipment supplier or project contractor. You compete for demand that has already formed. Cold outreach works in reverse: you select companies, identify the relevant role and give that person a reason for a short business conversation.
The difference becomes clear in a narrow market. A manufacturer of specialised production equipment may not be searching on the day you contact them, yet their company can still fit your target profile. A useful message refers to an observable business fact: “We saw that you are expanding your machining capacity. Have you already selected tooling for the new line?” It does not invent demand; it tests whether demand exists.
Before launching an outbound channel, define what makes a company relevant: region, industry, size, installed software, branch network, procurement activity or a business-development event. See how this work is structured in our guide to B2B lead list building.
How to compare outreach and B2B search advertising
| Criterion | Cold outreach | Yandex Direct |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | A selected list of companies and roles | A search query or another advertising signal |
| Who sees the offer | A named decision-maker or buying group | A user matched by campaign settings and their query |
| What you test | Segment, reason to contact, message and path to a meeting | Keywords, ad, landing page and bid |
| Control over reach | You can exclude specific companies and retain selected accounts | You can limit queries and audiences, but cannot name every visitor in advance |
| First useful signal | Reply, question, reason for refusal or request for material | Visit, enquiry, call or completed form |
| Main risk | No specific offer or credible reason to contact | Too little demand or expensive competition for it |
This comparison does not answer which channel is universally better. If your commercial team expects website enquiries, judging outreach only by emails sent is meaningless. If you need access to a preselected group of holdings, judging Direct only by clicks is also insufficient: a click does not show that the right account saw the ad.
Across our campaigns, 97.7% of addresses accepted an email and 5.93% of contacted companies replied. These are not a forecast for your niche or a promise of results. They show why outbound reporting should count company replies after deduplication, not delivery alone.
Which is cheaper: why you cannot honestly name a lead cost in advance
“Which channel delivers cheaper leads?” is often reduced to one budget line. That is not a reliable comparison. Direct spend depends on search demand, ad and landing-page quality, category competition, geography and your definition of an enquiry; outreach includes market research, contacts, email preparation, copy, reply handling and the sales work that follows genuine interest.
Agree on the unit of comparison first. A form completion with no authority or budget is not the same as a decision-maker asking for a calculation for their volume. Define what separates meaningful interest from noise before launch; see our lead definitions and guarantees.
How to evaluate a channel before launch
- Describe the target deal: product, sales cycle, buying roles and the next step that creates value.
- Separate search demand from outbound demand: identify what buyers already search for and which companies you need to select directly.
- Assign an owner for every response, call and meeting.
- Compare the cost of a qualified business conversation and the share of conversations that reach a proposal, not just the cost of an initial contact.
If your team cannot respond promptly, both sources become more expensive: an inbound enquiry goes cold, while an outreach reply waits for days. The economics of outbound can be modelled with our outreach tools, but the outcome depends on your offer and sales process.
When Yandex Direct offers a clearer route to an enquiry
Make Yandex Direct the primary channel when buyers can state their task in search and understand your offer from a landing page without a long explanation. This is common for clear services, standard equipment, urgent contractor replacement or requests with obvious commercial intent.
For example, a company looking for service for specific equipment in its region can immediately see your specialism, coverage, site-visit terms and enquiry form. That visitor has already taken the first step. Outreach to similar companies may still be useful, but it does not replace capturing urgent demand.
- Target buyers use proven search phrases.
- Your page answers the buyer’s main question before a sales conversation.
- Your sales team can process inbound enquiries without delay.
- Expanding existing demand matters more than selecting named accounts.
Direct works well as a standing demand-capture channel while outreach tests new segments. If advertising produces enquiries from companies of the wrong scale, do not conceal the problem by increasing spend; first revisit form qualification, search terms and the commercial offer.
When cold outreach is more precise than advertising
Outreach fits when the potential buyer list is limited, several roles take part in the decision or the product is not bought through an obvious search query. This includes integrations, consulting, contract manufacturing, project-based supply and specialised services for a defined industry. Instead of waiting for the right query, you create a queue of companies against which to test the hypothesis.
A weak opening says: “We help increase sales with a comprehensive solution.” There is nothing concrete to answer. A stronger version ties the message to an observable signal: “Your company profile shows deliveries to Kazakhstan. Do you currently have a regular contractor for export-packaging labelling?” A “not relevant” reply still clarifies the segment; a request for details starts qualification.
Outreach should not begin with an attached proposal and a request to book a meeting. Start with a verifiable question, then clarify briefly, and only then offer material or a call. This handover can be supported by reply handling and lead qualification.
- You can name companies for which the offer may be relevant.
- The offer has a business reason to contact them, not just a generic benefit statement.
- A manager can answer a specific question without a long presentation.
- You do not need to wait for the market to begin searching for your category.
When neither outreach nor Direct is the right move
Outreach is not a fit for a broad, undefined audience when you cannot explain why you are writing to a particular company. It will not repair an offer your team cannot sell in a meeting, and it cannot create urgency where a purchase is objectively postponed.
Yandex Direct will not open a closed list of organisations if people at those companies are not searching for the category. It also cannot replace a conversation with multiple stakeholders when one website visitor cannot decide without technical, financial and commercial approval.
There is one shared stop signal: nobody owns the pipeline after first contact. If a decision-maker asks for relevant experience and receives no response, or a website enquiry sits in an unreviewed form, the channel debate has lost its point. First assign responsibility, define qualification and reserve time for meetings.
