Why is access to LinkedIn only the start?
When people say LinkedIn is blocked in Russia, they often combine two separate tasks: accessing the platform and using it for sales. The first is a technical matter. The second requires discipline: your profile needs to explain who you are, why you work with this market and why you are contacting this person. An empty page with a generic business-development title looks temporary and gives a decision-maker no reason to accept a connection.
When reviewing a campaign, do not focus only on whether an account can be accessed. Review the connection between the profile, target audience and reply route. If an executive receives a request from someone with no clear role, website or industry context, they will usually ignore it. Who should you find when several people influence a company’s decision?
In Russian B2B, one person rarely makes the whole decision. A department head may initiate a commercial project, finance may assess the economics, and the owner may give final approval. Build the list from companies to relevant roles, rather than searching one job title and contacting every matching profile.
| Profile signal | What it may mean | What to check before contacting |
|---|---|---|
| A new role or area of responsibility | The person may have a new task and authority to change a process | Whether the role connects to your offer |
| A reference to a specific business area | There is a concrete topic for a first question | Whether the company information is current |
| A manager’s profile alongside an operational profile | You can map the people involved in the decision | Who to contact first and who to keep for the next step |
A job title is not proof that someone is ready to buy. Sending the same offer to dozens of people with identical titles produces replies such as “not my area.” A sound review identifies the owner of the task and keeps the company in the route. What does a first message that is easy to answer look like?
A connection request should not try to close a deal. Its job is to give the person a clear reason to relate themselves to the subject. Instead of “We help increase sales, let’s schedule a call,” ask a short, specific question about a situation visible from their role, product or company direction.
A weak approach asks for a meeting immediately and attaches a long presentation. The decision-maker has no reason to open it because they do not yet understand the task. A better approach leaves a simple choice: “a colleague handles this,” “not relevant,” or “please clarify your approach.” Even a refusal is more useful than silence because it shows the team where not to pursue and whom not to treat as a target.
What the first message should make clear
Copy cannot be assessed separately from the recipient list. A message that suits software development studios may feel out of place for a manufacturing business. Approve several complete combinations instead: segment, reason for contact, role and expected reply.
How do you accept a LinkedIn campaign before a lead report?
- Compare target companies with your market: remove unrelated industries, competitors and organisations with no relevant task.
- Open a sample of recipient profiles: the role, employer and area of responsibility should support the hypothesis.
- Review messages in each segment’s context: the reason for contact must not be a substituted variable.
- Review the reply log: original messages, response classification and next action should be visible.
- Agree how an interested contact is handed over to your sales team.
Good reporting shows more than the number of accepted connections. It shows the quality of conversations: who replied, what they objected to, which decision participant was identified and whether another channel is needed. Without this, you cannot distinguish a weak offer from the wrong role on the list.
When will LinkedIn from Russia not work?
This channel is not a fit if you expect a fast, high-volume flow of enquiries from a broad audience without a clear offer. It is also weaker where buyers do not maintain professional profiles, decisions happen at site level, or products are chosen by urgent price and availability. In these cases, LinkedIn may remain a research source but should not be the main conversation channel.
Do not start with LinkedIn if sales cannot respond within the working day or has not agreed what qualified interest means. A conversation can easily be lost between “send materials” and a manager who has not seen the original context. For coordinated channels and one reply route, consider multi-channel outreach.
