When is a target account list more valuable than a broad database?
B2B account-based marketing is not chosen because broad outreach does not work. It is chosen when the value of one right contract justifies preparing for a specific conversation. If an industrial supplier needs to enter selected production sites, a general message to a broad manufacturing segment will not explain why that particular company should engage. An ABM campaign starts with accounts, a reason to contact each one, a likely task and the roles that can influence the decision.
| Situation | Focused ABM campaign | Standard outbound campaign |
|---|---|---|
| You need specific companies | Work from a named account list and a role map | Expand the sample using an ICP |
| Your offer is complex | Check which task may be relevant to the organisation | Test whether the offer is clear across a segment |
| Several people take part in procurement | Prepare distinct approaches for the initiator, leader and procurement role | Look for one primary contact |
This approach suits integrators, consultants, manufacturers, B2B SaaS companies with long sales cycles and teams selling to a limited buyer group. If your list is not ready, begin with B2B lead list building: a company list should reflect a real commercial task, not just names that resemble your ICP.
What goes into an account brief?
Research does not begin with finding a personal email address. We first assess the company itself: how it makes money, which directions it is developing, where it operates, and which public projects or hiring signals may indicate a business task. Public company information, business directories, executive publications, tender platforms, industry media and open registers can all provide context. A fact goes into the brief only when it helps frame a legitimate business question.
A weak opening says: “We see that your company is a market leader and would like to discuss cooperation.” It could be sent to anyone and proves nothing. A useful opening is more specific: “We saw that you are expanding a service direction in the Volga region. In projects like this, commercial teams often need to plan utilisation for new field crews — is that already a live question for you?” The recipient can answer clearly, redirect the question or correct the premise.
In one company, a department head may initiate the project, finance may approve the economics and procurement may compare suppliers. We do not send the same email to all three. Each role receives its own subject for discussion: an operational task for the business leader, revenue or capacity for the commercial lead, and comparison criteria or next-step format for procurement.
- A prioritised target-company list with a reason for each inclusion
- A public fact or business signal for the first contact
- Roles that may influence the decision
- Contact routes and a rule for who is approached first
- A clear boundary between verified facts and assumptions
How does a campaign move from list to a substantive reply?
- Align the target list, product, deal type and companies excluded from outreach.
- Research accounts and identify facts that can support a relevant personal approach.
- Build the role map and contact routes, then check whether email addresses are suitable for use.
- Write scenario-based messages: first contact, a follow-up after silence, a response to “send information”, and handover to your sales team.
- Launch agreed contacts across the relevant channels and record every account-level response.
- Review replies and adjust the hypothesis: the reason to contact, the role or the list itself when there are no signals.
Channels are selected by the role’s availability and the context of contact. Email is useful when you need to leave a detailed question or attach concise material; see B2B email outreach for that format. Telegram can be appropriate when the person openly conducts business communication there, while LinkedIn can help confirm a role and context. One account does not receive the same text in every channel.
Campaign timing depends less on how quickly messages can be sent than on the depth of account research, the number of roles per account, the readiness of your materials and your sales team’s response time. Before launch, we agree on the working order and approval points; the general framework is described in how we work.
What does your team need to provide before first contact?
We do not need a perfect brand book or dozens of presentations. We need the information that cannot be reliably found in public sources: what you sell, to whom, under which conditions a buyer is ready to discuss it and why they should choose you. In ABM, this clarity matters more than in broad outreach: personalisation cannot rescue an offer your sales team cannot explain in one conversation.
- A target-company list or rules for building one
- A stop list: existing customers, partners, conflicting accounts and excluded industries
- A product description, its applicability boundaries and common reasons for refusal
- A sales contact who can promptly take over an interested conversation
- Approval of wording, commitments and materials that may be sent
We also agree on what counts as an acceptable next step. That may be a meeting, permission to send a calculation, or an introduction to the responsible leader. If you count only calendar slots as leads, replies such as “send an example” or “come back after the budget is approved” disappear even though they show the account’s position. Definitions and boundaries can be aligned in advance on lead guarantees and result criteria.
Which signals show whether account work is progressing?
ABM cannot be evaluated by the number of emails sent. One account may require several roles and different contacts, while another should be excluded after research. Reporting is therefore built around the company list: which accounts were researched, who was contacted, which reason was used, who replied and what is needed for the next action.
Across OT9’s own campaigns from April 2025 to July 2026, 811,200 companies received a contact and 48,100 replied — 5.93%. This is not a forecast for a particular target list: in ABM, account selection, contract value and the precision of the reason to contact matter more than an average. We separately mark a clear yes — a request for details, a proposal or a meeting — and do not present a neutral response as interest.
If an account says “send it to the general inbox,” that is not a ready deal or a reason to close the task. We clarify who replied, ask for the owner of the question or frame the next business question. If a decision-maker says “this is not a priority now; return after the branch launch,” the record retains the reason and a follow-up scenario rather than a formal rejection. These statuses can be passed into your systems through CRM integration for outreach leads.
When will an ABM campaign not be right for you?
This service is not a fit when a target list consists of a few random names and you expect us to guess the market in place of your team. It is also not the right choice when your product is designed for thousands of similar buyers and the immediate task is to test broad demand: researching every organisation would add unnecessary work.
There cannot be an honest result if sales cannot take over a conversation, the offer has no clear applicability boundary, or the only real reason for contact cannot be mentioned. Another stop signal is expecting a guaranteed contract from every selected company. We can test a hypothesis, reach relevant roles and show actual reactions, but the buying decision remains with the account.
If your priority is building a wider flow of conversations within an ICP, consider full-service B2B outreach. If you need an independent review of an existing focused campaign, cold outreach and deliverability audit may be a better fit.
ABM pricing depends on the size and complexity of the list, research depth, roles per account, chosen channels, any infrastructure preparation and the volume of reply handling. A precise estimate requires reviewing the list and offer. Format-level guidance is available on B2B outreach pricing.
